Sorten Muld means "Black Earth" in Danish, an apt description of the rich Nordic folk music the band tills. The band find old tunes and songs in books, then combine them with a modern atmospheric sound. The modern arrangements do not overwhelm the traditional essence of the music, but add a haunting echo to the lore-filled songs. "Real" instruments and Ulla Bendixen’s seductive voice warm the soundscape.
The three musicians who form the core of the band credit themselves as vocalist, sound designer and architect. Their subject matter, ancient Nordic ballads, are filled with tales of violent death, sexual misconduct, and horror. In other words, typical NorthSide fare. The presentation is decidedly modern, often with a dance beat.
For this release their sound is augmented by the Sorten Muld Orchestra:
