Shite'n'Onions Vol.1
Irish folk music has always had a rough, tough and raw edge: the sound of Irish working men letting loose in the pub after a hard day’s labor in industrial England. This thread starts with The Dubliners in the 1960s. In the 1980s, The Pogues were among the first to connect this music with punk rock.
Now (2004), we're at the beginning of an underground Celtic-Punk revival with bands such as the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly taking off from where the Pogues left.
ShitenOnions.com has helped to document and expose this scene. Editor John Murphy has compiled this forum for the best of the next generation of Celtic/Punk bands to be heard and for fans of this music to hear them. Most of these bands are self produced, self releasing or are otherwise hard to find in stores. Until now.
So, pull yourself a pint and crank up the shite!
More about the album here.
- "..the energy level is infectious, and there are a surprisingly high number of good original songs, particularly Siobahn's "The Kilfinane Parish" and The Electrics' "Killiecranked Up"..." -- Dave Soyars, The Irish Herald / The New Irish Gael (April 2004)
- "This is the new Irish music. Shite'n'Onions is one hell of a website/webzine/online radio station totally devoted to Celtic sounds. This CD completely encompasses their mission statement and has a bunch of toe-tappers to boot." -- Number 8
- "Celtic Punk or Irish Punk, call it what you want. I love it and when I received this cd to review, I instantly turned into a grade school girl overcome with giggles of joy. There's lots of great music to be heard on this cd; pick it up and have it. God, this music makes me want to drink (like I need a reason!)." -- Denis Sheehan, askewreviews.com
- "...the mix of traditional instrumentation and revisionist sneer can be quite engaging. The Mahones kick things off with two rousing numbers, including "Drunken Lazy Bastard", one of the album's highlights. The sound will be thoroughly familiar to listeners with previous experience in the genre -- tin whistles, blazing guitars, furious rhythms and slurred, chanted choruses -- but no less effective for it. The collection's strength is in the sheer number of acts that take energetic and convincing stabs at traditional Celt-Punk (can I really call this fusion traditional yet?)..." -- Splendid
- "Basically if you are a fan of Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly or the Pogues, this is a disc that you cannot miss. Shite 'N' Onions is the soundtrack for celebrating St. Patrick's Day every day of the year!" -- Hussieskunk
- "The hard-charging music on this disc has the subtlety and grace of a swift knee in the crotch during a drunken brawl. Guitars snarl, banjoes scatter, the accordion heads for cover, and the tin whistle runs for its life in frantic arrangements by the likes of Neck, The Mahones and The Tossers. Lyrics are bitten off and spit out in a gravelly growl. Tin whistle trills are dotted with whoops and hollering. You get the drill. There might be some of you out there that will sneer when they read this review as you retreat into your CD collection for your shopworn copy of Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash. Spoilsport! While it might be argued that there's nothing here that you haven't already heard, the collection is a gritty affirmation that this genre is still vital. " -- Irish Voice
- "...each band on this collection holds their own, demonstrating not only punk rock energy, but an actual understanding of what it is that makes Irish folk music so appealing and relevant today." -- !*@# (Exclaim)
- "Irish music is, as we all know, a hell of a broad spectrum....somewhere in amongst the mix is one of the lesser-known sub-genres - Celtic Punk. So what are the essential components of the Celtic Punk sound?
