Led by onetime Uncle Tupelo guitar tech and utility sideman Brian Henneman, the Bottle Rockets released their first album on ESD in 1993.

Soon after that, they stumbled to national prominence as part of the burgeoning "alternative country" movement (or whatever you wanna call it), landing a major label deal with Atlantic Records for their second release The Brooklyn Side (originally on ESD), and earning reams of critical hosannas for taking everyday life in Festus Missouri and imbuing it with, as the Chicago Tribune so eloquently puts it, "a tender-hearted poetry in their songs' portraits of small town, working-class joys and pains...the Bottle Rockets create a rowdy world of wonders."
